Meta Platforms’ Facebook and Instagram experienced a significant outage on Monday, affecting thousands of users across the US.
At the peak of the disruption, around 1:35 p.m. ET, over 12,000 users reported issues with Facebook, while more than 5,000 faced problems with Instagram.
The outage disrupted platform logins, access to feeds, and other services.
The disruption lasted approximately 90 minutes before Meta managed to restore services for most users.

According to Downdetector, a website that tracks outages by collating reports from multiple sources, by 2:09 p.m. ET, the number of reports had drastically decreased to around 450 for Instagram and 659 for Facebook.
This incident follows another major outage earlier this year that affected hundreds of thousands of users globally.

US Facebook and Instagram users report widespread issues
The initial wave of disruptions occurred primarily on the East Coast, where users reported difficulties accessing Facebook’s login and feed services.
Instagram users experienced similar problems, including issues with refreshing their feeds or posting content.
Downdetector data revealed that 63% of Facebook users encountered login problems, 27% had trouble accessing the platform itself, and server-related issues accounted for 10% of the reports.
At its peak, over 12,000 reports were filed for Facebook and more than 5,000 for Instagram.
This spike in reports, captured by Downdetector, underscored the widespread nature of the disruption.
Despite the high volume of complaints, the number quickly dropped as Meta restored services.
By the time services were largely operational again, most users had regained access with minimal ongoing issues.
Meta’s silence during the US outage raises questions
Meta Platforms did not immediately respond to requests for comment following the outage.
While most services were restored within 90 minutes, the cause of the disruption remains unclear.
Earlier outages this year were attributed to technical issues, though Meta has not officially confirmed whether Monday’s outage stemmed from a similar glitch.
This recent incident mirrors a major outage in early 2024 that affected Facebook and Instagram users worldwide.
During that outage, over 550,000 users reported issues with Facebook, and around 92,000 had problems with Instagram.

That outage lasted more than two hours, with users from various regions experiencing login and feed-related issues.
In both cases, users flocked to other social media platforms, such as X/Twitter, to express their frustration, sharing screenshots of error messages.
As Meta Platforms continue to dominate the social media landscape, recurring outages like Monday’s raise concerns about the reliability of its services.
Although these issues are often resolved quickly, the increasing frequency of outages has heightened user frustration.
Meta’s failure to provide an official explanation for Monday’s disruption, coupled with its silence during previous outages, has led many users and industry experts to question the robustness of its infrastructure.
